I like the chestnut double stake rings that JC Connors makes but at around $1/ring I figured I could make some cheaper myself. I used 3/16" cold rolled steel. 40' of it cost me $3.85 at the local steel yard. To make the loop in the shape I wanted I found an old piece of steel with three pieces of re-bar welded to it from an older project. I put the rod into the re-bar as shown below. It is important to be sure the end of the rod is well past the center post because the rod will shorten up a bit when you make the bend around the bottom post. I then bend the rod around the bottom and top posts like this. To complete the bend I like to take the rod all the way around the top post past center. And then bend it back in line approximately where I want it to end up. It seems to make a more uniform shape this way. I then take a pair of bolt cutters and trim the rod so the two ends of the ring will be close enough to touch with minimal tweaking. After trimming I put the open ring in the vice and slide a link or two of good chain onto the ring. Using a pair of pliers I simply bend the end of the into position where they can be welded. I first weld the top (outside) And then the bottom (inside) Some may be a little wider than I prefer so I just squeeze them in the vice until they are the shape I like. After it is completed I attach mine to the chain with an mb crunch proof. If anyone has any critiques or suggestions please feel free to share.
