This is a step by step post on how to correctly dig a pocket set. Not much to it, but there are a few things that will help you get you more fur. Last year this exact location produced 2 mink and a muskrat. There were Raccoon tracks and mink tracks at this location, and it recently rained heavily earlier this week so they are fresh tracks. Step 1 - Pick your location this location is on a trout stream. Step 2 - Shave away part of the bank so that it is about a 90 degree angle to the water. The reason for shaving the bank is to make sure the animal gets in the water and works the pocket from the water. It doesn't let the animal sit above the pocket and reach in to get the bait, or allow a mink to go in from the sides. Step 3 - Start digging. As you can see, I use a tile spade. It makes short work of digging pockets. The depth of my pockets are the length of the spades blade. And about as wide as the trap I'm using. Step 4 - Stake and Bed your trap. I'm using a laminated Duke 1.5 here, and an 18" T-bar stake at this location and holds good. This picture shows the trap placement that I use at pocket sets. I want to catch Coons, Mink and Rats at this set. I hope this helps someone out. Kyle Moses
