Ok I will try to explain this the best way I can.
To make the drowning rod.
I use a piece of either 3/8 cold rolled steel or a piece of 3/8 stressproof rod. I buy a 10 ft. section of the rod and cut it off to 8 ft. long. I then have a drowning rod that is 8 ft. long and a 2 ft stake.
After the rod has been cut to length, I heat one end of the rod and flatten it out for about 6 inches. It does not have to be flattened a lot, just enough to keep my piece of angle iron from sliding off the end of the rod. [We will get to the angle iron a little further in the paragraph.]
After I have flattened my rod on one end, I take a piece of angle iron, about 1 in. wide x 1/1/2x 1/1/2in. I then drill 2 holes in the angle iron. One hole should be big enough to allow the angle iron to slip over the rod freely and have your angle pointing toward the bottom of your rod. I then drill another hole big enough to put a J hook into. The j hook hole is for attaching your snare to the angle iron.
The next step is to weld your washer on the opposite end of the flattened end on your drowning rod. I like a washer with at least a 1/2 in hole in it , so I can drive my stake through the hole.
Ok once this is all done , I connect a 42 in. snare with a camlock onto my angle iron with a j hook . I use 3/32 7x7 snare cable for all my snare making.
After all this is done , I head for the beaver pond with my drowning device and snare ready to go.
I find a place that I think beaver either travel by or frequent a lot.
I then make a nice castor mound and add some of my homemade beaver lure for attraction.
after the mound has been made, I proceed to put my drowning rod out. To do this I stick my drowning rod into the lake bottom at about a 30 or 40 degree angle about a ft or so into the mud. The rod is then setting in kind of a slt. raised condition. All I do is just grab the washer end of the rod and bend it down to the ground and drive my stake through the washer I have welded to my rod. Then you put your snare holder in position and hang your snare. The next step is to wait for Mr. Beaver to visiting.
