Muskrats can be taken pretty easy in many differnt types of sets. Let talk about a few of these. Feed bed sets this is where the muskrats will build little mounds of grass and debrie. They use these to set and feed on the food that they bring to this site. So if you can find there feed beds placing a small coil spring trap or a stop loss trap along these feed beds will catch the muskrats. I will place these traps on drowner wire so they will be taken away from the beds. Thus leaving the set undisturbed for the next catch. Here is a couple of pics of the muskrats in this type of situation.
The next is the colony traps these will effectively catch more than 1 muskrat at a time. Place these colony traps in the muskrats runs and at den entrances. No baiting is required. Here are some pics of these in action and the results.
Here is some of the damage these little guys are causing. Notice the bank giving way. I bet there are eight hugh den sites in this dam some old some new. You can see where they have been after this dam for a long time.
The next set of pictures shows the catches that can be made in them.
Another great set is a root set. Ill explain this one. Take and pull some cat tail weeds up by the roots and place a mound of these at the waters edge. Then take a small trap and place this in the water about 2 to 3 inches back from the pile of roots. Attach to a drowner wire. I like to use old window weights for the drowner weight. Now on top and around the edge of the pile of roots place some colgate mint tooth paste. The muskrats love mint. Shouldnt take more than 1 night to make a catch from this set.
Another way of taking muskrats is to place 110 kill traps in the runs and den entrances. I like to use the suports for setting the traps in the muskrat runs.
There are more but these will be the highest producing sets for muskrats. And always remember to save the rat scent glands to make your own muskrat lure.
